Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
