Taliban Authorities and Pakistan Claim Multiple Deaths in Recent Cross-Border Fighting
New fighting erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday, with each side accusing the opposing side of starting deadly confrontations.
The Pakistani armed forces stated that its troops had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government spokesman said that 12 non-combatants had been killed and more than 100 injured by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the alleged fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Hostilities between the neighbouring countries has escalated since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital blamed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny claims that it is harboring armed groups targeting Pakistan.
Social Media and Armed Engagements
The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, trying to convince the public that their side is inflicting greater losses.
The most recent clashes come after severe border hostilities over the weekend, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and linked terrorists". The reported casualty figures announced by each side could not be independently verified.
Several days of unstable peace that had lasted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.
Local Accounts and Impact
Videos allegedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including footage said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions destroyed. These videos have not been authenticated.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that clashes erupted at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another resident in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, said that "intense hostilities persisted for almost five hours".
"We observed drones and jets flying over us, some of our relatives are wounded," they added.
A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak stated that he counted "seven bodies and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including males, females and children.
The circumstances were "strained" and more casualties were being taken to medical care, he noted.
Displacement and Global Reactions
A local authority figure in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of families have been displaced since last night due to the heavy fighting". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the bodies of two armed forces members.
In a distinct night-time engagement on the north-western border, the Pakistani military claimed that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been killed.
The clashes have led to appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could step in to broker peace.
On Wednesday, Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the clashes.
"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard civilians, and follow global regulations," he stated.
Historical Disputes
Pakistan has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to operate from their land and fight against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to impose a rigid Islamic-led system of governance.
The Taliban leadership has consistently denied these allegations.
