American Strike Kills 4 during Suspected Drug Boat Incident off Venezuelan Shoreline

According to US Defense Secretary the Pentagon's top official, a US strike killed four people during a mission targeting a boat allegedly carrying illegal drugs in international waters close to Venezuela.

This action occurred just a day after US officials notified lawmakers that the country was entering an armed confrontation against drug cartels.

It represents no fewer than the fourth such unprecedented and controversial operation by US forces outside US territorial waters over the past month.

Details of the Strike

The defense secretary stated that the boat was struck while carrying large quantities of narcotics destined for America, which he described as poisoning the people.

“Intelligence assessments definitively verified the vessel’s involvement in drug trafficking, identifying those aboard as narco-terrorists using established smuggling routes,” he declared via an online statement.

Hegseth also claimed that the vessel was “affiliated with” terrorist groups, a label applied in a confidential memo sent to lawmakers.

Juridical and Political Context

US officials has notified the legislative branch regarding its view that drug trafficking organizations as “non-state armed groups” whose activities smuggling drugs “constitute an armed attack” against the United States.

The memo was accompanied by a classified briefing for members from the Senate defense panel, conducted earlier this week.

Administration officials attempted to justify these operations under Trump’s constitutional authority, which allow military action for self-protection during confined conflicts.

Previous Operations and Global Response

Prior to this strike, American military had conducted attacks against three vessels in Caribbean waters, resulting in 17 fatalities and sparking global condemnation.

The defense secretary reiterated that such operations “will continue” as long as “the attacks on the American people are over”.

Administrative Restructuring and Oversight

The Trump administration have allegedly empowered a White House security body to function as an independent entity within the executive branch, a shift from previous administrations which had it reporting to the security chief.

The reorganization affected the coordination and execution of these military actions, with some officials being informed about operations shortly prior to they occur.

Despite the administration’s claims, juridical specialists point out that designating trafficking groups as foreign terrorist organizations does not provide additional authority to employ lethal force without solid proof connecting them with a foreign government.

To date, the administration has not provided such evidence concerning the supposed infiltration by cartels into Venezuela's regime.
